It was just a letter he picked. Seriously. His name was Hiram Ulysses Grant and when he went into the military, everyone got something (can’t remember what) with their initials on it and since he didn’t want his to say HUG, he changed his name. I’m fairly certain this is how it went. Hope this helps!
