What does the Rime of The ancient mariner teach?
The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is a story of the power of behaviour. It relates a tale of longevity and the stain of sin. Without consideration of the albatross as having any legitimacy or purpose or even simply as a good omen in a storm it is slaughtered. The conflict and various tragedy’s the act caused during the whole voyage can be considered a metaphor for the political turmoil which exists today in the world over pollution, Greenhouse warming, overfishing, etc. The Albatross is a metaphor for the evil mankind commits against nature and the consequences that must be paid, over and over and over again for the offences we commit against our planet, and its inhabitants. Today, our dying planet is the payment or consequence we must live with for the carelessness and cavalier way we have used the planets resources. We have in effect rendered useless and ineffective our own talents and ingenuity. We have reached into the future and demolished the hopes and dreams of generations to come
