What does the rash from poison ivy look like?
The rash consists of areas of redness and blisters. The blisters often occur in a line due to contact with the edge of a leaf or from dragging the resin across the skin with a scratching finger. How soon does the rash appear after exposure? It may occur within a few hours after exposure, or it may be delayed up to a week. I know Ive been exposed to poison ivy. What should I do? If you know you have been exposed to poison ivy, wash with soap and cool or warm (not hot) water. It doesnt have to be a special soap, either. Any kind of soap will help inactivate the plant resin that causes the irritation and remove it from your skin. Washing immediately after exposure is best. The longer you wait the less of the resin you will be able to remove. Remember to wash your clothing, too, since the irritant can be carried on your clothes.
