What does the proposed ballot initiative attempt to do?
Our initiative would establish a nonpartisan, independent, citizen’s ethics commission to hear complaints of unethical legislative behavior, hold hearings when the complaints have merit, and make recommendations to the legislature for appropriate action. Hearings and recommendations would be public. Our initiative would also establish a substantive and strict code of ethics that would serve as the standards by which the Commission and Legislature would judge alleged unethical behavior of legislators. 3. Why are you taking the ballot initiative route? Why not push lawmakers to sponsor and pass ethical reform legislation? In the past, attempts to push lawmakers to sponsor and pass ethical reform legislation have resulted in either no action or very weak and inadequate legislative responses.
