What Does the Procedure for Hammer Toe Surgery Involve?
There are two main methods for surgical correction of a hammer toe. In an arthroplasty procedure, bone and cartilage are removed to correct the toe deformity. A small segment of bone is removed at the joint to eliminate pressure on the toe in order to relieve pain and straighten the toe. The tendons and ligaments surrounding the joint may also be reconstructed. Interphalangeal joint arthrodesis is a type of bone fusion between the proximal and middle phalanges. Cartilage is removed from the base of the middle phalanx, the bones are fixed together with a pin, and eventually fuse together.
