What does the Privacy Act do?
• Limits the collection of personal information; • Prevents secret Government record systems; • Prevents secret use of Government records; • States individual’s right to see and correct records; • Requires safeguards to be implemented to protect the security and accuracy of the information; and • Allows for civil remedies and criminal penalties to be assessed for violations under the Privacy Act.
