What does the Prison Service think about prisoners opening bank accounts?
The Prison Service is officially supportive of prisoners opening bank accounts. “Imprisonment provides a good opportunity to assist offenders to open bank accounts and thus be better prepared for life after release. It is, therefore, advantageous for prisoners to open bank accounts and establishments should assist them to do so.” Paragraph 1.5 of PSI 35/2009 Identity (ID) for Bank Account Applications for all prisoners: Prison staff should provide “reasonable support to enable [a prisoner] to open an account”.
