What does the pickup coil do?

0

A#12:The pickup coil senses the two rectangular tabs on the flywheel as it spins, and sends a pulse to the CDI. The CDI relies on this pulse to know where the pistons are at relative to TDC, and also at what RPM the motor is turning at by how many pulses it receives over a given time period. The pickup coil needs to be close enough to the flywheel tabs to sense them, but not so close that the tabs hit the pickup coil.
