What does the number 3 have an emphasis on in gothic literature?
The number three in many cultures is considered to be a holy number because it represents balance. In architecture, the most stable building is a truss, a building with a triangular base. Why the connection was made between architecture and God, I don’t know, but it was. The number four was also considered holy because it represented perfection: the perfectly symmetrical square. That’s why the number seven was super holy, because it was the result of adding three and four. I think the reason why later cultures (like European cultures during Gothic times) valued the number three was because of the Holy Trinity: The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit.
