What does the Nobel Foundation do?
The Nobel Foundation is the entity that received the bulk of Alfred Nobel’s estate upon his death in 1896. It now has an investment which has grown over the last 100 years. One of the primary purposes is to provide for the Nobel Prizes and to manage the assets for the conduct of the Nobel Prize ceremony and associated activities. Apart from tax issues, what else do you advise on? There are a number of nonprofit corporate issues that I get involved in. For example to increase the Nobel Foundation’s educational outreach, we have set up in the U.S. a nonprofit called the Nobel Prize Education Fund and obtained for the fund itself a separate determination letter of 501(c)(3) status. Do you travel to Sweden much? Most of the work I do from here, but I have been privileged to attend two Nobel Prize ceremonies, one in 1996 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the death of Alfred Nobel, and one in 2005. What other charitable organizations do you represent? I set up the Citigroup Foundat
