What Does The Name Sonora Mean?
The word ‘Sonora’ is attributed to a state of Mexico and you can hardly find a person who is the bearer of this name. The word can trace its origin in the word ‘xunuta’ that conveys the idea of ‘in the place of corn’. The history behind the name is that an indigenous group was living near the town of Huepac and the distinct quality of those people was that they covered their walls and ceilings with the leaves of corn. There is another reason also that some people put forth for the origin of the word and it says that the tribes of Opata used to live near the Sonora river and in those times people call them as ‘Sonants’ and from there the word came into popular use.
