What does the Local Government Investigations and Compliance Inspectorate investigate?
The Inspectorate investigates alleged breaches of the Local Government Act 1989 (the Act), the overarching legislation for Victoria’s 79 councils. For example, the Inspectorate investigate allegations of where a councillor has misused his/her position by disclosing confidential information or attempting to gain an advantage for themselves or another. Sometimes in the course of an investigation, other criminal or administrative matters are discovered. In these circumstances, the investigation is widened or the details are referred to the appropriate agency such as Victoria Police or Ombudsman Victoria.
