What does the “L” and “2” transmission options mean in a 2001 toyota rav4 AWD?

I just want to know what these two options do besides “D”… A: L is first gear for very low speeds 2 it 2nd gear. When selected both of these lock the transmission in one gear and prevent it from shifting. Most people never need these selections unless you are going up a steep hill and you transmission keep shifting.
