The Maneki Neko as they are called, are from Japan and the Kanji varies but often on their collar is the Kanji  猫, ‘Neko’, which is quite literally cat.  The Kanji on the object the cat is holding supposed to be a coin and usually it says ten million ryō 千万両.  A ryō is an ancient monetary unit that would be roughly the equivalent of a thousand dollars now but its meaning is more symbolic than literal; meaning a lot of money… sometimes they have 副 or ‘Fuku’ on their collars which basically means good fortune
