What does the Golgi complex look like?
The Golgi complex is also a series of flattened membrane sacs. But these sacs are separate from one another and stacked on top of each other. The entire complex of membrane sacs looks somewhat drippy, since vesicles seem to be dripping into it and off of it. What does the name “Golgi complex” mean? The name doesn’t mean much… this organelle was named for the scientist Camillo Golgi, who was one of the first cell biologists. You can click on the link to read about him (he won the Nobel prize in 1906) and to see his picture. What does the Golgi complex do? The Golgi complex receives vesicles from the rER. The vesicles fuse right into the Golgi complex, dropping off their contents into the Golgi complex lumen. You see, the protein isn’t really done. When a polypeptide is first made, it often has to be tinkered with a little bit until it is in its final form so that it can fold up and associate with other polypeptides into a working protein. It is in the Golgi that any modifications to t
