What does the following adage mean regarding the stock market?
Answer The intended wisdom behind this adage is that each stock must be evaluated on its own merits, separate and apart from the overall stock market. While the trend of the overall market may be down, there are stocks whose characteristics nevertheless make them attractive purchases; similarly, even in an “up” market, some stocks will decline because their negatives will override the upward trend of the market as a whole. When people speak of “the stock market,” they tend to lump everything together, as if all stocks moved in lockstep – which, of course, is not the case.
