What does the expiration date mean for polaroid film?

It depends on how the film was stored, if it was refrigerated you can go well over the use by date, the use by date assumes normal storage at room temperature. If it out of date with polaroid film the first thing to alter will be colour balance, followed by exposure latitude. It’s all a question of degree. As there are no processing costs involved you might as well try it and see, just don’t use it for anything ‘vital’.

It’s pretty much the date that you should use the film by if you want the pictures to look right. You’ll still get a picture but it’ll be underdeveloped and might become discolored and could continue to discolor over time.

Im not 100% what it means but all film has an expiration date on it. Once that has expired then colours and contrast may change. Some parts of the picture may even come out different to other parts of the picture, like you say, spots. But the date could also suggest on a polaroid when its effective work date is. Because the chemicals to develop the picture are inside the photo (so to say) then they may seize to work after a certain amount of time. I think its safe to say its still usable as some retailers sell of stock of film, but whether the quality is as good a new I don’t know.
