The EPA Mid-Atlantic office: (1) provides funding to state UST & LUST programs to primarily assist them with facility inspections, and release investigation and cleanup of regulated UST systems (funding levels in 2008 totaled approximately $10 million); 2) approves and oversees state UST & LUST programs to ensure they operate at a level that is no less stringent than the federal regulations; 3) conducts facility inspections and associated enforcement actions, and supports the similar actions of states; 4) provides administrative support and facilitates communication among Mid-Atlantic states and other regional/national UST programs; 5) establishes goals and measures performance of UST & LUST programs; 6) conducts limited field investigations of the nature and occurence of releases from UST systems; and 7) provides training, technical and field support.
