Ingested EDTA is sometimes used for treating minor cases of heavy metal poisoning, but more likely the doctor will recommend regularly eating beans, which will perform the same function. It is also sometimes ingested to alleviate mineral deficiencies that occur with certain diseases such as Crohn’s Disease. In cases of severe heavy metal poisoning that are discovered rapidly enough, EDTA is sometimes injected directly into the blood stream. EDTA therapy is not risk-free. It can cause hypocalcemia which can affect heart rhythms, headache, nausea, vomiting, bone marrow depression (which means that blood cell counts are reduced), and even injury to the kidneys. Lately there have been a number of claims that oral EDTA is a magic miracle cure for atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) and therefore a preventative measure for heart attack.
