What does the crankshaft posistion sensor do?
It tells the PCM (I am talking about 1995-present cars) the position of the crankshaft (the crankshaft converts the up and down motion of the pistons into a rotation) which allows the PCM to measure engine RPM (RPMs are the revolutions of the crankshaft per minute). On newer cars, it also allows the correct timing of spark plug firing and fuel injection.
