WASHINGTON, Jul 09, 2001 The Center for Economic and Policy Research on Monday published a study that casts doubts on the benefits of globalization . While the study does little editorializing, it suggests that we should re-examine conventional wisdom about the benefits of open markets and a global economy. The study examines economic growth, life expectancy, infant and child mortality and education and literacy for 116 countries over two periods, 1960-1980 and 1980-2000, chosen so that the slow-growth 70’s were included in the first period, and the study was thus to a degree balanced. The first period lies entirely before the adoption of the current consensus economic development policies, while the second period covers their adoption and dissemination.
