What does the American Cancer Society (ACS) do especially the Tobacco Control Action Team to be called TCAT?
~This grassroots group successfully lobbied for an additional 25-cent tobacco tax increase to fund children’s health care and prescription drugs for seniors, while helping to prevent youth smoking. ~TCAT worked on passing the law in Massachusetts that required tobacco companies to disclose nicotine level and ingredients in cigarettes. ~TCAT wrote letters and visited legislatures resulting in the allocation of millions of dollars per year in the state budget for better tobacco control efforts in Massachusetts. What Can You Do? You can join TCAT and become a volunteer advocate, which is what I did when beginning the initiative to make my town smoke free. In order to compete with the millions of dollars the tobacco industry spends each year in Massachusetts (and the country) on advertising and lobbying, as much influence from the grassroots level is necessary.
