it is a measure of how the UK stock market is doing. other indices include Dow Jones USA CAC 40 France the problem with an index is that it only contains a few companies, the FTSE 100 is the one usually quoted, with just a hundred companies which are quoted on the London stock exchange. There are thousands of companies operating in the UK, many foreign-owned and not on the London stock exchange.
