What does that mean for the children since the struggling shriners will keep hospitals open?
Shriners Hospitals for Children will accept insurance reimbursements and possibly sell or lease some excess hospital space in order to keep open all 22 hospitals, officials said Thursday at the close of their annual convention in San Antonio. The hospital in Galveston, meanwhile, is expected to reopen in a few weeks, said Douglas Maxwell, the fraternal group’s new CEO. “The hospital is doing its final rework on the drywall that was hurt by Hurricane Ike,” Maxwell said, adding that the four-week reopening estimate is rough because some staff members must be replaced. The hospital offers free care to burn victims from Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and some parts of Colorado. Some of the burn care from the Galveston hospital was transferred to the group’s hospital in Houston, and a few pediatric burn patients have been sent to San Antonio.
