What does sustainability mean to Tarmac?
In its third report, Tarmac in the Environment 1997/8, Tarmac’s Independent Environmental Advisory Panel set out a strategy for promoting sustainability within Tarmac based on the delivery of six objectives. • Create a Group-wide approach to the environment. Tarmac has established policies and targets on key issues such as energy, resource use, waste and supply chain management. • Develop Group-wide environmental performance indicators. Tarmac has developed methodologies designed to deliver robust baseline data from which meaningful indicators can be developed. • Adopt a global environmental perspective. Tarmac has extended its UK-based environmental management initiatives to its overseas companies. • Build alliances with key stakeholders. Tarmac has continued to engage in external dialogue which enables the company to direct its performance improvement towards areas viewed as important by its stakeholders. • Raise the Group’s external profile on environmental issues.
