What does Structural Integration feel like?
A. There is no specific answer to this question because no one has the exact same experience. Structural Integration is unique and though it has been compared to deep tissue massage and other types of bodywork, it is best to think of it as a totally new experience. The nature of the work is deep and therefore it is sometimes described as “intense”. A client to whom I was giving a session reported that “it felt like a monster was being removed from between [his] ribs”. This comment reflects a feeling that something uncomfortable is being removed from the body, not inflicted on the body. Emmett Hutchins, one of my highly esteemed teachers, described the experience of Structural Integration as “the sensation of moving from weakness into strength… exhilaration of owning a new part of oneself, the immediate and simultaneous reeducation of one’s being, the joy of self empowerment and waking up”.
