Well, as frequently happens in any many industries, the technology or company that is first to the market, or which dominates the market, tends to have its own standards recognized as the “defacto” standard. For example, IBM wasn’t the first to create what we would think of today as a personal computer, but the “PC (or Personal Computer)” that IBM developed, came to be viewed as the standard, e.g. the terms we still use today: PC Compatible.
