What Does Soli Mean?
Soli has different meanings in different languages. In Turkish it means ‘salts’. This is why the present town of Tuzla (which has ample rock salt deposits) in Bosnia and Herzegovina was called Soli in ancient times. Soli is also the name of an ancient city on the lush island of Cyprus. In olden times Cyprus was divided in to ten city kingdoms, Soli was one of them. Today there are still reminders of Soli’s former glory like a basilica, whose artistic mosaic floors have attracted many a tourist to Soli. Soli may also pertain to the ancient city formerly known as Cilicia but later christened Pompeiopolis. Jus soli is a Latin phrase which refers to the principle that states that an individual’s nationality at birth is in accordance with his place of birth. Ratione soli is also Latin phrase which means ‘according to the soil’.
