SLR stands for Single Lens Reflex. This is a type, or class, of camera that reflects the lens image off of a reflex mirror onto the focusing screen for viewing. Since there are many types of cameras, SLR is a shorthand way of telling people what kind of camera you own. There are medium format SLRs also, but in daily life most people identify the word SLR as being a 35mm camera that has a reflex mirror viewing system with interchangeable lenses.
