What does Singularity mean physically?
Why the term Singularity is used in math is pretty straight forward if you know the matching terminology is “singular point.” You can rely upon the basic definition of the word to see we are referring to a point where a function exhibits “a trait marking it as distinct from others; a peculiarity”. If you understand the concept of singularity as applied to mathematics then you should not have a problem with the application to physics. I suggest you review Schwarzschild’s solution to Einstein’s field equations. You will see that there are two mathematical regions where the solutions are undefined… one at r = 0 and another at r = r’ where r’ is the Schwarzschild radius associated with the given mass. While the first is a true singularity cause by division by zero… the second is a coordinate singularity…an artifact of the choice of coordinates used to solve the system of differential equations.
