What Does Science of Mind Believe About Jesus?
Teachers of Science of Mind often say that we consider Jesus to be the “great example, not the great exception.” Jesus said: “Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these…” (John 14:12). In Science of Mind we interpret “believes in me” to mean “believe as I believe – to have the same absolute faith in God that I have.” Ernest Holmes said, “Mental Science does not deny the divinity of Jesus; but it does affirm the divinity of all humanity. It does not deny that Jesus was the son of God; but it affirms that all people are the ‘sons’ of God. Science of Mind believes Jesus is the great example, not the great exception. He is not Lord and Savior; therefore, he did not die on the cross. He is a great teacher, however, whose teachings should be followed. Any world teacher who helps mankind be free from material, intellectual, emotional, or spiritual bondage is a spiritual savior. Jesus, the teacher, showed us a way to be released from spiritual ignorance and bondage. Christ is viewed as a universal principle rather than a person. He was a human personality in which the Christ Principle or Divine Personality expressed itself on earth. The principle of Jesus Christ represents the mystical marriage of our inner spirit with our outer personality. This union produces an expression of life.
