What does road adoption involve?
Road adoption means that the council takes on the maintenance of a private road so that the general public can use it. The council will only adopt a road when it is sure that it is safe and up to current standards, for example, it is paved and has kerbs, surface water sewers and lighting. An unadopted road is a private road, which is not maintained at public expense. This means that the council doesn’t have to repair or maintain the street, even if the street is a public right of way.
