What does “REU” stand for, anyway?
“REU” stands for “Research Experience for Undergraduates.” REUs are summer programs, funded by the National Science Foundation, that provide undergraduate students of the sciences (mathematics, physics, chemistry, computer science, biology, and the like) the opportunity to do high-quality research with professionals in their field. The NSF sponsors dozens of REU sites each year, about twenty of which are in mathematics.
