Academic staff and research students in the Music Department either write music (see Composition) or write and speak about it, in which case their discipline is musicology. Both are pursued to international levels of recognition, which means major performances and broadcasts, commissions, CD recordings and published scores for composers, books and academic journal articles published, reviewed and cited internationally for musicologists. There are two composers on the full-time staff, headed by Professor John Pickard, and five musicologists, headed by Professor Stephen Banfield. Staff speak at international conferences, give invited lectures and broadcasts at home and abroad, and sit on the executive boards of journals, editions, book series, concert-giving bodies and venues, and other musical enterprises.
