The pegs are what hold the strings in place. When pegs begin to wear down, they are much less likely to hold their pitch, and will go out of tune easily. Every string has about 200 pounds of tension on it, so the pegs must hold the strings taught, or the tension will pull everything out of tune. This is why pegs occasionally have to be replaced. I don’t know enough about piano tuning to give you a specific price, but I do know that it can be fairly expensive.
