What does Region Free mean?
The term “region free” refers either to a DVD which can be played anywhere in the world, on any player, or to a DVD player which is capable of handling discs from anywhere. This term is also used to describe game consoles and games in some areas of the world. Consumers may opt to purchase region free products so that they have more access to products they are interested in, and some manufacturers choose to produce region free goods to appeal to more consumers. Various parts of the world are broken up into “regions” divided by numerical codes. The idea of separating the world into regions is that manufacturers can produce products which will only work in a particular part of the world. This is theoretically done to protect copyrights and embargoes, as for example when a movie which has no distribution rights in the United States is released on discs which play in the European region only.
