Primary means that it is a personal number such as 01562 562458 (i.e a home or mobile number) Extension number is a number in the work place so for example if you work for a big company some one could ring 0845 545 658 and then put in the ext no. 523 and it would go straight to you. The 0845 545 658 number would normally just take you through to the reception for example. Hope this helps.
