What does “possessions” mean in Australian football?
‘possessions’ means that a player has ‘possessed’ the football, or got hold of the football and either kicked it or handballed it. Good players hope to ‘possess’ the ball about 30-40 times per game. A tackle in AFL is the same as a tackle in rugby but if a player gets tackled in AFL and does not dispose of the ball correctly the ball is turned over to the other side. A good tackle is very important because it prevents the opposing side from going forwrd and scoring a goal and gives the tacklers team a chance to go forward with the ball.
