What does plastics mean in the movie “The graduate”?

Having lived through that time period, I can tell you that plastics were the newest product of technology at that time, and everything we touched that had always been glass, metal or wood was being produced in new forms of plastic. The older man was telling Benjamin how to get a prosperous career in the fast-growing field, but Benjamin was hardly thinking about careers and money at that time. Using the term plastic to mean something fake and undesireable came some years later. Shampoo used to be sold in glass bottles, which of course shattered in the shower and we had to deal with broken glass while our eyes were filled with soap. Plastic shampoo bottles were not looked down on!
