What does penalty mean in criminal law?
A penalty is the punishment imposed by a judge for the criminal conduct involved in the case. These can range from a fine to prison. There are many things in between including community service, adjudication withheld, supervision, conditional discharge or probation. Each state uses different terms for different outcomes. Each outcome has its own implications regarding criminal records or possibilities of expungement.
