What does PanLex do about unwritten languages?
Most of the world’s languages are rarely or never written. When a language has no writing system, a user can add a variety for the language and use it to help develop and test a new writing system for the language. It is also possible to transcribe the sounds of expressions in a language with a transcription system, such as the International Phonetic Alphabet, and use that system for the variety’s expressions. For varieties that have representation systems other than writing, such as sign languages that use pictures or video recordings to represent lexemes, it is possible to record in PanLex references, such as URLs, to such pictures or video recordings.
