What Does Opportunistic Mean?
The term opportunistic is an adjective meaning taking immediate advantage of circumstance of potential benefit. This is often done unethically and hence is frequently used in the negative sense of the term. Thus the term may be used to mean taking advantage of any opportunities as they may arise or exploitation of opportunities with little consideration of principle or consequences. It could also mean to feed on whatever food is obtainable. It may also be used to mean being or something that is caused by a generally harmless micro-organism which may become pathogenic after the host’s resistance is damaged. In this sense of the term it means an opportunistic infection.
