What Does Nevus Mean?
The word nevus is defined as a benign growth on the skin. Moles and birthmarks are common examples of nevi (the word nevus is the singular form of the word nevi). In fact, moles and birthmarks are general names for nevi, and nevus is the scientific name for moles and birthmarks. A mole is made up of a cluster of melanocytes and adjoining supportive tissues. It usually appears to be a spot on the skin which is tan, brown or flesh-coloured. The plural of the word nevus is nevi. It is defined as any congenital lesion of the skin. It is circumscribed. A nevus is a table malformation of the skin and occasional also of the oral mucosa. It is presumed to be of hereditary origin and not due to any external causes. The excess or deficiency of tissues may involve either epidermal, connective tissue, adnexal, nervous or vascular elements.
