Some would say what NASA really “stands for” is to do what ever they have to to make sure they get to keep their jobs. . After the Apollo program was over there was a real possibility that the U.S.A. would no longer have a manned space program at all and the agency could be dismantled. Nixon knew the public was in love with NASA and flushed with pride over it’s lunar accomplishments. . NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) sold congress on the idea that it could save a lot of money if they let them build a space shuttle that NASA and the Air Force would operate on a almost weekly basis to low Earth orbit. . After 14 lives lost and being dumped by the Air Force the agency is retiring the Space Shuttle and reinventing itself once again to do what it wanted to do to begin with when Apollo ended but that Nixon wouldn’t go for, and that’s to build a Moon base. . Deja Vu .
