What does Mezzogiorno mean?
The term Mezzogiorno typicall refers to a region in Italy which consists of Abruzzi, Molise, Campania, Puglia, Basilicata, Calabria, Sicily and Sardinia. Mezzogiorno is also the Italian rendition of meridies (Latin for ‘south’,). The term came into vogue after Italy’s unification. It was sometimes associated with notions of poverty, illiteracy, and crime.
Mezzogiorno also refers to "midday" or "noon" in Italian. This Mezzogiorno region in southern Italy is known as the Mezzogiorno because of the intensity of sunshine there in the middle of the day.
