– Simply put, the word Legion comes from the Latin “Legio” which originally meant “To Levy” (to choose), this originates from the Republic (apx. 300 BC to 40 BC), when land-owning Roman Citizen men were required to serve in the army when the call came. – Today, “Legionary” means a soldier of a legion. It is derived from the French “Legionnaire”, influenced by the original Latin. (Roman soldiers were called “Miles” (pronounced “me-lays”) and later “Milites”, where we get the word Military).
