What does J Krishnamurti mean when he talks about choiceless awareness, and what is the awareness about ?
The self according to Krishnamurti is not different from the totality of consciousness. The totality being desires, memories, conditioning, emotions etc. The self is a center of this totality of consciousness, the point from where mind functions. A choice according to Krishnamurti arises when mind is divided as to one over the other and tries to resolve the tension through the above said center. But the mind in conflict with itself cannot make a choice. Here there is conflict in ‘what is’ and ‘what should be’ but the ‘what is’ cannot be converted by mind into the ideal something. Hence choice does not solve issues but complicates them through its desires, ideals etc. The breaking of the center according to Krishnamurti is Freedom. This Freedom comes from a choiceless awareness of all contents of consciousness, of the knowledge of the way the mind functions. Then there is cessation of the center and that is Freedom.
