Answer Shane: Thank you for your question. When a Lutheran pastor speaks of decision theology he or she usually is referring to the teaching that emphasizes our needing to come to Jesus. This theology sees that as humans, we meet Jesus halfway so to speak in the salvation process. Jesus offers us a gift, but we must come forward and take it. Usually, this is done is some sort of public profession, such as the Sinners Prayer. It is called decision theology since the person decides to follow or accept Jesus. Luther, and therefore Lutherans, found this type of teaching inadequate to describe the salvation process. In his famous treatise, Bondage of the Will Luther insists that our human will has no capacity to choose the right all by it self. We cannot come to Jesus since our human will is bound by sin and self-worship. We dont come to JesusJesus come to us. We dont find Jesuswe are found by him.
