What does it mean when portions of highway are colored white?
A white segment means that there is no current speed data for that portion of highway. There are two possible reasons for this: the INFORM system does not (yet) extend to that roadway, or that the system is temporarily down for that particular section of roadway. This occurs often during roadway construction, which can damage the speed detectors, or the communications network. In these situations, it may take a while before NYSDOT can repair the problem. Understandably, their primary concern is finishing the roadwork quickly. Other possible causes include temporary power outages, which are usually repaired quickly, and storms.
