All abnormal pap smears require attention, follow-up and/or treatment. It is actually extremely rate that an abnormal pap smear means cancer is present. Most abnormal pap smears are caused by infections. The most common infection is a virus similar to the virus that makes it appear like “Warning Cells”. Currently the best way to tell if these “Warning Cells” are due to a virus infection is by a Colposcopy and/or biopsy.
